Thursday Dec 07, 2023
Thursday Dec 07, 2023
Do you work hard, hoping your hard work will be noticed & recognized? Are you ever frustrated when it’s not? Do you feel uncomfortable talking about yourself? Are you concerned sharing your accomplishments will seem arrogant?
I’ve been there, & my friend & this week’s guest, Susan M. Barber, has been there, too.
As a former Fortune 500 IT Director turned Executive Coach, Author & Podcast Host, Sue experienced her own challenges throughout her 25+ years in the corporate environment at Kraft Heinz. Now, Sue helps business leaders play bigger, increase their visibility & shine a light on their leadership strengths so they can elevate their position in the workplace.
As a leader who was somewhat invisible for a long time, she took a journey to learn how to be visible in her own authentic way. Her mission is to share what she learned with others & leverage her platform to create a visibility movement for leaders to show their value & be seen for their true talent.
In this episode, Sue & I discuss:
What led her to starting her own business, writing a book & becoming a published author
Vulnerability...the necessity of it & the challenges associated with it
Imperfect action
Identity shifts & her own shift away from a company where family members had worked for years
Shifting from auto pilot to dreaming & considering possibilities
The fear of doing anything for the first time & trusting you’ll figure it out, even when you initially don’t know “how”
Her own invisibility in the first draft of her book, The Visibility Factor
Listening to the stories that hold us back
The RISE framework illustrated in her book, including self-reflection, even when it’s uncomfortable
Some tactical tips for becoming more visible that don’t require additional time
What holds us back from being visible
Why performance should be only 10% of your focus when it comes to career success, & what the remaining 90% of your focus should be (as Harvey J. Coleman shares in Empowering Yourself: The Organizational Game Revealed)
Being respected vs liked
The necessity of asking for help

13. Focusing on the Gap vs the Gain...Deficiency vs Development
Thursday Nov 23, 2023
Thursday Nov 23, 2023
Do you have a tendency to focus on what you have yet to achieve? Do you have a tendency to move the finish line once you’ve accomplished a particular goal? Rather than focusing on & celebrating the progress you have made? Me, too.
So in today’s episode I share a portion of 10X is Easier Than 2X, a book written by Dan Sullivan, Founder of Strategic Coach & Dr. Benjamin Hardy, that clearly articulates how you can actually achieve more by doing less.
In this particular portion, the authors share the challenges that result from being “in the gap” & measuring yourself or your situation against an ideal. Plus they share the benefits of being “in the gain” & measuring yourself against yourself & where you were before instead.
If you’re interested in making the rest of your life better, listen in! Reach out to me, & let’s chat about how I can help.

9. Journey from Air Force Academy to Farming with Col Kevin Krause
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
Thursday Sep 28, 2023
At a crossroads? Wondering what’s next? Wondering how your past relates to what you could do?
In this episode, my brother, Col Kevin Krause, shares his journey from the Air Force Academy to sustainable farming in “retirement”. He’s still serving, just in a different way.
Kevin grew up in rural Iowa, where our grandparents & parents farmed. He recalls many hours performing farm chores, as well as witnessing the small family farms of the day give way to the larger mono-cultured-corn-centered farming of today. Kevin left Iowa in 1985 to attend the United States Air Force Academy & retired from the Air Force in 2015 after 26 years of military service.
During a military assignment near Washington, DC, Kevin & his wife, Mikki, became educated about how far America’s food system had fallen from their ideals. They read books, watched documentaries, attended seminars & visited Polyface & other farms to learn all they could about different production models to implement on a future farm.
In 2015, they set about making their dreams of sustainable farming a reality in Hampshire, Tennessee.
In this episode, Kevin & I discuss:
When & how he became passionate about sustainable agriculture
Their transition from the “rat race” lifestyle & keeping up with the Joneses (although he never really tried)
His disinterest in keeping up with the Joneses or anyone else
His slow, fast-paced lifestyle
His “what you should be when you grow up” assessment in junior-high
The biggest threats to the US…other “bad guys” vs our own health & nutrition
His perspective on opinions vs data
Their homesteader community
The mystery of Mother Nature & the reward of being a student & serving the nation in a different way
The dramatic & appropriate difference in our paths, even though we’re related
Find Kevin & his wife, Mikki, & learn more at their Liberty Trace Farm website, on Facebook & on Instagram.

8. Be Curious About Others & Improve Your Relationships in an Effective Way
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
Being curious about other people sounds simple, but it’s not easy. We have a tendency to hear what we want to hear, overexplain & under listen, & as a result, we continue to misunderstand & be misunderstood.
Today I share some practical takeaways to better understand the people in your life & make your personal & professional relationships even better.
Start by asking yourself why you do what you do, THEN get curious about others. Investigate why they do what they do withOUT using the word “why”. Then listen. Truly listen.
Most misunderstandings are due to differences in strengths, not differences in personalities as we generally assume. My friend, coach & the founder of YouMap®, Kristin A. Sherry, shares more in the Misunderstood Blog at myyoumap.com.
Kristin’s awesome, the blog is awesome, & YouMap® is awesome. Go to myyoumap.com & listen to Episode 2 of The DASH Mindset podcast to learn more! Work with me to do YOUR YouMap®, & learn more about yourself & others in the process.
Also…Follow Jackie Pelland & my friends at Slingshot25 on LinkedIn! Brilliant & hilarious…An amazing combo.

7. Be Curious with Yourself
Thursday Aug 31, 2023
Thursday Aug 31, 2023
Why do you do the things you do? Why do you make the choices you make? Do you know? Most of us don’t!
This week I’m sharing some examples of why I do some of things I do that others likely consider ridiculous. You might even be one of them, & that’s ok! What are you doing that others might think is ridiculous? Are your choices the right ones for you?

6. You’re Not Good at Some Things, & It’s Ok
Thursday Aug 17, 2023
Thursday Aug 17, 2023
This week, I’m sharing some of my crazy summer, including some of the stuff I’m just not good at...physical caregiving, in particular. I even have a definition for it now.
Being sub-par at some things doesn’t mean you suck. It means you’re human...which I’m guessing you are. So recognize & focus on the stuff you're good at. Own the fact that there's some stuff you're just not. Let go of those expectations of yourself, & know it's OK. It's likely in everyone's best interest, anyway.

5. A Life of Travel with Derek Baron (AKA Wandering Earl) - Part 2
Thursday Aug 03, 2023
Thursday Aug 03, 2023
Welcome to Part 2 of my conversation with Derek Baron, professional nomad & founder of Wandering Earl!
After graduating from college in 1999, Derek left home for what he expected to be a 3-month trip to Southeast Asia. Instead, he has been traveling the world non-stop since & has visited over 130 countries on 6 continents. He is the founder of the Wandering Earl.com travel blog & Wandering Earl Tours which offers a unique style of laid-back, small-group tours (that I highly recommend).
In this episode, Derek & I discuss:
Some of the unexpected imperfections of travel
His puzzle solving talents…his ability to recognize tour guests’ needs & rearrange behind the scenes
The importance of working with experts who provide spontaneous & unique local experiences
Being kidnapped by half-ass amateurs in Bangladesh
How bad things happen everywhere…especially if you yell at a bar
The affordability of living abroad & why the 50+ crowd is one of the fastest growing migratory segments
Considering your reason for travel & connecting with & learning from people who are already doing it
Expectation setting before travel
Traveling with a group whose style matches your own
My recommendation that he go to Poland…tomorrow
Adjusting to living in the States for the first time since 1999
Simple interior design…his bathmat dilemma & empty fruit basket
Where to find Derek:
Discussing travel is his jam, so reach out to him!
